FAQ's
We know there is a lot of varying information about solar power, so we have compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions. If you have any further questions or concerns, our expert staff at SafeSolar would be happy to answer your questions. How does solar electricity work?
Light hits the photovoltaic cells – more commonly known as solar panels - and is converted to electricity This electricity is converted from direct to alternating current, for use in the home. When the system is producing more power than is required the excess is exported to the National Grid. At night, when the system is not producing enough power to meet your needs, power is imported from the grid as normal. How many panels will I need?
Number of panels depends on roof size and your 'investment' budget. What are the effects of shade?
Shading is highly critical, even minor shading can result in a loss of energy. This is because the panel with the lowest illumination affects the operating current of other panels to which it is connected. For example, if you have ten panels and one is shaded, then all ten panels will operate as if in the shade..What is the best angle of panel inclination?
The maximum total annual solar radiation is normally due south and at an inclination from the horizontal equal to the latitude of the site minus about 10-15 degrees. For example 30 degrees is an optimal tilt in southern England, increasing to almost 40 degrees in northern Scotland. How do I get paid?
Your power supplier will pay you on submission of your Generation Meter Reading (usually quarterly). How long does an installation take?
SafeSolar will install your system within two weeks. Actual installation time normally only takes a day or two for an average size house and involves little disruption to your household. Will they work in the UK and during the winter?
Yes. Solar power depends on intensity of light, not necessarily direct sunlight. So even when it’s overcast, your solar panels will be producing electricity to help power your home.Does a PV system need batteries?
No, the system is connected to the National Grid. At night, when the panels are not generating energy, electricity can be imported from the grid in the normal way. Any excess electricity generated during the day, for example when you are at work, is sold back to the utility company. Will we continue to have power during a power cut?
No. Any grid connected solar electricity system is designed to switch off in the event of a power cut. This is a legal requirement and is a safety feature designed to stop electricity leaking on to the National Grid and harming workers trying to restore the fault.Do I need planning permission?
Recent legislation means that most solar heating and solar electricity systems do not require planning permission. We can check with your local planning officer on your behalf. Are there any grants/incentives available?
In addition to the Government’s feed-in tariff , there are a number of grants and incentives available, including local and regional grants. We can check for grants in your area. What maintenance does a solar electricity system need?
Solar electricity systems require no maintenance. Although a build up of dirt can affect performance, the panels are generally self-cleansing in the rain. However, they can be cleaned with either a hose or, if possible, soapy water and a non abrasive brush if they do become dirty.
